There was a study performed in Germany to determine whether or not solving jigsaw puzzles impacted cognitive skills significantly enough to be used as an intervention in older adults with dementia. What it found was that the use of jigsaw puzzles strongly engages multiple cognitive abilities like perception, constructional praxis, mental rotation, speed, flexibility, working memory, reasoning, and episodic memory. When used long term (in the study 30 days), it relevantly benefitted cognition. Think about the benefits of daily use of jigsaw style puzzles in a restorative therapy program or memory care unit!
